| | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | π¨π¦Β Canada holds off on tariffs. Following a "good phone call" between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Trump, both sides agreed to pause the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on each other's imports for 30 days. This temporary agreement comes as Canada promises to deploy 10,000 troops to the northern border and address fentanyl smuggling, part of a broader $1.3 billion border plan. | πΈπ»Β El Salvador cut a historic deal with the US. El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele proposed to house dangerous American criminals in his country's largest prison, an unprecedented move nearly certainly to be challenged in court. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the offer, and Bukele emphasized that, with additional American funds, the move could help make El Salvador's prison system sustainable. | π° Trump established a US sovereign wealth fund. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create a sovereign wealth fund β a state-owned investment portfolio often used to buy stocks, bonds, precious metals, real estate, etc. The fund, expected to be created within the next 12 months, could potentially be used for projects like the sale of TikTok and investments in national defense, manufacturing, and medical research. | π«Β Trump advisers discuss a plan to cut the Education Department. Officials in the Trump administration are considering an executive order that could shut down key functions of the Department of Education, though fully abolishing the department would require an act of Congress. The move, driven by Trump and allies like Elon Musk, aims to shift more educational authority to states and away from federal control. |

| *Indicates content from our sponsors | | MY THOUGHTS | Musk and Trump cross the Rubicon | Good morning. It started two weeks ago. USAID employees had their communications cut. Then senior executive leadership was purged. And after a weekend of Musk's gutting of the department, employees were told not to return. | War has been declared on USAID β an agency long synonymous with the CIA's foreign influence operations. The intelligence community is panicking. So is the media. | And for good reason β there is no bottom to USAID's tentacles. From covert operations in Cuba, Venezuela, and Mexico to deep involvement in Europe, Russia, Ukraine, the Taliban, the Middle East, and Africa β foreign leaders have spent decades calling it out as far more than a "human aid organization." | The agency does it all β from toppling governments to globalizing woke politics and pushing sex changes for kids in the Sub-Sahara. | This is a direct hit on a power center of America's intelligence apparatus β one that has its own agenda, separate from the president's, and one that actively worked to prevent Trump from being elected. | Now, Trump and Elon Musk have delivered their first major blow. They've crossed the Rubicon. | I spent hours researching USAID yesterday, and we're putting together a deep dive for our premium readers soon. Stay tuned. | |

However, CNN and Young did reach an undisclosed settlement regarding punitive damages, according to the judge. | Corrections are included in newsletters for transparency. |

| | THE MAIN STORY | "Time for it to die": Trump and Musk nuke USAID | | What's happening: The Department of Government Efficiency, led by billionaire Elon Musk, recently waged a war on the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Musk labeled USAID a "criminal organization," stating it's "time for it to die." Now, the agency is being dismantled by the Trump administration. | Catch up: Founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, USAID manages US humanitarian efforts worldwide, employing around 10,000 people operating in over 60 countries. However, the agency has a long history of being used to spread American soft power.
| Adversaries' criticism: In 2012, Russia expelled the agency for "attempts to influence political processes through its grants," while China claims the US uses aid "as a bargaining chip." | Friends' criticism: El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, a friend of Trump, also criticized USAID, claiming the money is used for "destabilizing movements" under the guise of supporting democracy and human rights.
| Wasting funds: During a stream on X, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) revealed that USAID had obstructed her investigation into its practices, blocking access to its databases and reporting that up to 60 percent of its budget was spent on salaries and rent β not for development projects. | Bizarre projects: The White House released some of USAID's priorities, which included $1.5 million to advance DEI in Serbian workplaces, $70,000 for the production of a DEI musical in Ireland, and $47,000 for a transgender opera in Colombia. Funding Wuhan: The agency also funneled nearly five million dollars to EcoHealth Alliance β which was involved in research at the Wuhan laboratory that leaked COVID-19.
| Dark operations:Β Robert F. Kennedy Jr.Β accused USAID of having deep ties to the CIA, alleging that it secretly funneled billions of dollars to spark political unrest in countries like Ukraine, which led to the 2014 coup that ousted a democratically elected government. | What's next: Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been named acting director of USAID, informally bringing the agency under the State Department's purview. There are discussions in the Trump administration over shuttering it entirely. | Why it matters: USAID has spent more than 60 years spending enormous amounts of money on wasteful, or at worst, destructive projects around the world. This move reflects the Trump administration's commitment to reshaping US foreign policy and cutting malicious institutions at home. | |
