WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🇳🇱 Dutch Arabs sought out and attacked Jews. Arab gangs violently attacked supporters of an Israeli soccer team last Thursday via beatings and shooting fireworks; some were even chased with knives and thrown into rivers. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent two planes to evacuate Israelis, and Dutch leader Geert Wilders demanded that the attackers be swiftly deported.

🇮🇱 Benjamin Netanyahu fired his defense minister. On Election Day in the US, the Israeli prime minister fired Noav Gallant, who had served as his defense minister for nearly two years, on election day. Gallant and Netanyahu had clashed publicly, with Gallant opposing Netanyahu's efforts to restrain Israel's Supreme Court and resisting exemptions from military service for Orthodox Israelis.

🇪🇺 Europe's populist right will soon have an ally in the White House. The populist wave that carried Trump to power in 2016 continued in Europe over the past four years; in almost every European country, populist parties have grown in strength. Under Joe Biden, they had to deal with icy relations and constant attempts at interference. Now, they can work with President-elect Trump to build a Western populist coalition.

🇺🇦 Trump is forming a plan for Ukraine. A top plan now circulating among top Trump advisers reveals that Trump may call for an immediate ceasefire, with Russia holding onto the land it currently occupies and agreeing to an 800-mile-long demilitarized zone patrolled by Europeans. In return for Ukraine agreeing to put off its demand to join NATO for 20 years, the US would supply the country with more weaponry to ensure its defense.

🇪🇺 EUROPE

North Korean soldiers in Ukraine are gorging themselves on pornography, a source told the Financial Times.
NATO's secretary-general said that Trump was right when he demanded NATO members spend more on defense.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for Europe to become more independent from the United States.
Germany's left-wing governing coalition collapsed; elections are likely early next year.

🌏 ASIA-PACIFIC

India held talks with the Taliban's defense chief.
Australia's Ambassador to the United States deleted tweets he had made in 2020 that attacked President-elect Donald Trump.
Vietnam is attempting to stay neutral in a South China Sea dispute between Malaysia and China.
