 Hi there👋

I have some concerning news about Bean. Recently, he's been less interested in food, and we've found small amounts of vomit in his crate the past two mornings.

While he hasn't been lethargic and has maintained his bouncy, happy demeanor, his eyes seemed glossy. Kelly agreed with me that we needed to get him checked right away, as something definitely seemed off, though we couldn't pinpoint exactly what.

It's Not Good News

We took him to the emergency vet at the hospital that performed his leg surgeries first thing this morning. We just received the initial results tonight, and unfortunately, it's not good news. His liver values are off the charts, and it appears he has a diaphragmatic hernia - a break in the diaphragm allowing abdominal organs to move into the chest.

A Diaphragmatic Hernia

I googled it and learned that the most common cause is trauma, such as being hit by a car. It's likely we all missed this during his full workup because it was so small initially, and it's been progressively worsening.

They're keeping him overnight to try to improve his liver values, and he'll have a CT scan tomorrow. The challenging part of all this (besides the astronomical vet bills) is that he may need another major surgery. He's so young and has been through so much already. I'll be honest - I'm feeling quite defeated right now.

Bean Is A Fighter

My job is to protect him, keep him safe, and let him heal, and this doesn't feel like I'm succeeding at that. The silver lining is that Bean is a fighter which is crucial for getting through challenges like this. What makes him so strong is that he now knows true love - thanks to you and this entire supportive community. I'll keep you updated as we learn more.
