Wendler was a prominent powerlifter with the Westside Barbell Club in the 90s and developed the program as a holistic approach to strength training in the off-season. 5/3/1 uses 90% of the 1-rep max for the main lifts: bench press, deadlift, squat, and overhead press, during microcycles (one week) mesocycles (three or four weeks). |
