From Welcoming to Wow: My 5 eco-attitude Tips on Preparing Your Guestroom for the Holidays
Hi ,
The holiday season is just around the corner, and if you're gearing up for a visit from your in-laws, making their stay memorable is a top priority. Let me share some personal tips on how to create a cozy and inviting guest room that will leave a lasting impression this holiday season.
First up, clean up! Start by giving the guestroom a thorough cleaning. Dust, vacuum, and tidy the space to make it feel fresh and welcoming. Rule of thumb in any room in your home, but particularly in a guest room: less is more. More space = more welcoming = more comfortable. By clearing out clutter in the guest room, you also create space for your guests to unpack their belongings.
To finish the cleaning, physically and spiritually, consider burning some nice Palo Santo wood or incense. Palo Santo, or "holy wood" in Spanish, comes from the Bursera Graveolens tree and has been revered in South America for centuries for its spiritual healing and uplifting qualities. Pala Santo is excellent to use for:
- Inviting positivity to a space
- Promoting calm and relaxing vibes
- Purifying a place with its gentle aroma
Remeber to only buy ethically and sustainably sources Palo Santo collected from naturally-fallen trunks and branches.
Invest in high-quality bedding with soft and breathable sheets, cozy blankets, and plush pillows for a restful sleep for your guest(s). My favorite, of course, is ettitude's own Cleanbamboo® Signature Sateent Sheet Set! I also layer in blankets and cozy throws. Adding an elegant coverlet such as the recently launched ettitude Linen+ Quilt or a cozy Vegan Cashmere Throw Blanket to your bedding can instantly warm up a room.
If your guest room has an attached bathroom, ensure it's well-stocked with clean towels, toiletries, a hair dryer, and extra toilet paper. Elevate the experience with guest bath sheets instead of bath towels. Give them that lux spa-like feeling. Add cozy slippers or guest bathrobes for guests you really want to impress.
Home is where the Wi-Fi is! Offer Wi-Fi access and share the password in advance. Given our reliance on smartphones, the most satisfying places to stay provide convenient bedside device chargers. I have a bedside LED lamp with a wireless charging base & USB port. It's stylish and energy-efficient - a double win.
Not only do their devices need a recharge, but the guests might also feel hungry and thirsty at night. I also keep a fresh bottle of water and a small snack station with some holiday treats for late-night cravings.
5. A Few Extra Touches...
One of the easiest ways to make a space feel more lively is to add things that are, well, living. Having fresh flowers and plants within the guest bedroom is a welcoming element and a great way to bring a bit of the outdoors inside for your visitors.
I always include a small vase of garden lavender flowers in the guest bedroom. It can reduce stress and promote good sleep – very much needed for guests after their long and exhausting trips. There is nothing like adding a candle to the atmosphere. So I also put a lavender scented candle on the bedside table.
My personal favorite bedroom plant is the snake plant. It is one of those indoor plants proven to have physical health benefits. Unlike other plants, the snake plant produces oxygen at night. In fact, it is best known for releasing the highest amount of oxygen among all houseplants. This makes the snake plant very friendly for your bedroom. Besides producing fresh oxygen, the snake plant can also absorb mold and cancer-causing toxins from the air, like benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, carbon monoxide, and toluene. And it's also low maintenance!

By following these personal touches, you can create a guest room that will truly impress your in-laws and other house guests and make their holiday visit a memorable and enjoyable experience. Remember, it's the thought and effort you put into making them feel welcome that counts the most.
